Rumor: Upcoming Switch 2 Exclusive Will Be a Treat for SRPG Fans

Some recently uncovered evidence suggests that Nintendo is working on a new strategy role-playing game for the Switch 2. The console exclusive may be a new entry in the Fire Emblem series.

The most recent mainline Fire Emblem game, FE Engage, was released in January 2023. Two years later, rumors began circulating about a new installment being in development.

Adding to the recent industry rumblings, YouTuber Doctre81 recently uncovered a LinkedIn profile of a veteran 3D character modeler, who mentions working on a "sequel of [sic] Nintendo's SPRG" for the Switch 2. The page, belonging to one Takeshi Maruyama, doesn't go into any more details, though the limited information that it does provide could still be interpreted as a strong indicator of another Fire Emblem entry being in the works.

Fire Emblem Is Nintendo's Only Major SRPG Franchise

Looking at Nintendo's intellectual property holdings, Fire Emblem is the only major SPRG franchise owned by the Japanese gaming giant. Between that and the fact that another series entry has been rumored to be in development for a while now, that seems to be the likeliest candidate for what the newly spotted LinkedIn profile is referring to. The only other somewhat feasible option is the Wars series, which has been without a new mainline entry since 2008, though it did get revived in 2023 with the Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp remakes.

According to Maruyama's LinkedIn profile, he was contracted to work on the mysterious Switch 2-exclusive SRPG between January and April 2025. Four months is a fairly typical length for a temporary 3D character modeler contract in AAA development, especially for experts brought in during a concentrated production window. This suggests that whatever this mysterious project is, it was most likely in active development as of early 2025. Character modeling typically takes place early in full production, following the finalization of design, concept art, and technical constraints. The unannounced Nintendo project was therefore likely past the vertical slice stage and in early-to-mid production as of 2025. Given that modern AAA development cycles typically span at least five years, the game may not be ready to ship for several more years.

However, the timing of character modeling can vary by project, and it's possible Maruyama was brought in later to address specific needs during production. Regardless of the identity of this mysterious project, one recent report claimed that a new Fire Emblem game is planned to be announced sometime in 2025. Based on Nintendo's recent practices, the new entry in the long-running franchise will likely have a short announcement-to-release gap of under a year.
