Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis after missing Club World Cup opener - Yahoo Sports
Kylian Mbappé missed Real Madrid's Club World Cup opener Wednesday due to an illness, but the team did not provide any additional details on his status. On Thursday, Real Madrid announced Mbappé was hospitalized due to acute gastroenteritis.
The 26-year-old star reportedly started feeling symptoms Monday and missed the team's practice Tuesday. Despite that, the team left the door open for Mbappé to play Wednesday if he felt better. Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso said Tuesday the team would "wait until the last minute" to make a decision on Mbappé, per The Athletic.
Mbappé was discharged from the hospital on Thursday and rejoined the team in practice, per Fabrizio Romano. He will gradually return to training and will still receive specific medical treatment for the issue.
Following Wednesday's contest, a 1-1 draw against Al Hilal, Alonso seemed to confirm Mbappé's illness was worse than expected. Alonso said after the game that he was unsure whether Mbappé would be available for Sunday's game against Pachuca.
Real Madrid did not provide a timeline for Mbappé's return, saying the forward will "undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment" before he's able to return.
Acute gastroenteritis has symptoms similar to a stomach flu, though they are different ailments. Acute gastroenteritis can include upset stomach, vomiting and inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
In his first season with Real Madrid, Mbappé scored 43 goals in 56 games. That performance earned Mbappé both the Pichichi Trophy and the European Golden Shoe.
