Florida’s new super speeder law is already getting some owners of fast cars to consider selling their rides lest they end up in jail. That might sound crazy, but these people know how tempted they are to speed, which combined with a vehicle that can do so with ease makes for a bad combination.
Learn why a Kentucky state trooper is being sued after he arrested a mother of three.
One example that’s been making the rounds is a discussion on the r/lamborghini subreddit. A guy who claims to own a Lamborghini, although he doesn’t specify what model, says he’s seriously considering selling his supercar.
The guy, who goes by joyridechamp on Reddit, says he doesn’t care so much about the $500 fine. But when it comes to the 30 days in jail for the first offense, that’s a deal breaker for him.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office already made an example out of the very first super speeder it caught, just two minutes after the law went into effect. That driver was arrested and went to jail.
According to the law, a super speeder is anyone who goes over 100 mph or does 50 mph over the posted speed limit. While the first offense is a $500 fine and 30 days in jail, repeat offenders face a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail, plus the possibility of their license being suspended.
Many on the Reddit thread had less-than-positive things to say about Florida and its governor, thanks to the new law. But others seem to suggest all the guy has to do is hire a good attorney and the jailtime won’t happen.
We’re not here to give legal advice, but getting it from Reddit is probably a really bad idea.
It will be interesting to see how this new law affects speed enforcement efforts in Florida, and if others will put their performance cars up for sale, fearing doing time behind bars.
