Another summer, another Buckeye Lake island home for sale.

Last year, Journal Island hit the market on the lake, before selling this spring.

This summer, it's Onion Island, just off the shore from Millersport, on the western end of the lake, accessible from nearby marinas.

"It’sone of the few islands with only one residential homeon Buckeye Lake, and we believe the onlyisland property currently for sale in all ofOhio," said Brian Kemp, the Keller Williams Capital Partners agent listing the home for $1.59 million.

The island, almost an acre, includes a 1,700-square-foot home built around 1900.

Buckeye Lake's Onion Island, which includes a 1,700-square-foot home, has been listed for $1.59 million.

The island comes complete with its own legend, though sadly, it's almost certainly not true.

Buckeye Yacht Club claims World War I flying ace and Columbus native Eddie Rickenbacker spent his honeymoon on the island. While it's possible that Rickenbacker visited the island, he and his wife, Adelaide, actually spent their honeymoon in Europe for seven weeks, according to a journal he kept during his honeymoon now preserved in the Auburn University Libraries.

Either way, today's Onion Island home is far different than it was in Rickenbacker's day.

The home in recent years underwent about $500,000 in improvements, Kemp said.

Renovations include a fully renovated kitchen, updated bathroom, new flooring, custom lighting, new plumbing, new electrical and water systems and a backup generator.

The yellow story-and-a-half home sits almost directly on the lake, with only a deck separating the house from the water.

Inside, the home includes the remodeled kitchen open to an adjacent living room. Two adjacent rooms, open to the living spaces, are used as bedrooms. Two other bedrooms can be found upstairs.

Like most lake homes, this one is built to be enjoyed outdoors. A deck wraps around much of the home, including a covered portion that includes an outdoor kitchen and television.

A smaller second-floor deck offers more expansive views of the lake.

A 10-person firepit can be found off one end of the home while on the other side, a smaller firepit hugs the shore.

In addition to the dock that runs along the home's deck, a second dock extends into the lake. Behind the home, a shed offers room for yard tools.

Onion Island is among 21 islands on the lake, 18 of which include homes, according tothe Buckeye Lake Historical Society.

As Kemp puts it, the island "is a one-of-a-kind luxury escape that offers both seclusion and accessibility."
