What happens when a comedy icon and a former president join forces for a fresh take on American history? HBO is about to find out. In a collaboration no one saw coming—but everyone now wants to see—Larry David and Barack Obama are teaming up for a new comedy series that promises laughs, surprises, and just the right amount of awkwardness as it revisits 250 years of U.S. history. With David stepping back into the spotlight and the Obamas expanding their creative reach, this project is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about TV events of the year. Here’s what we know so far.

HBO Greenlights New Sketch Comedy from Larry David—with a Presidential Twist

Larry David is heading back to HBO—but this time, history is getting the Curb treatment.

According to Variety, the legendary comedian and creator of Curb Your Enthusiasm is developing a new limited sketch comedy series for the network, once again teaming up with longtime collaborator Jeff Schaffer. The untitled six-episode series will take a satirical look at American history, with David not only co-writing the scripts but also starring. Schaffer, who served as showrunner, executive producer, and director on Curb, will direct the new show and executive produce alongside David.

The creative partnership between David and Schaffer stretches back decades, beginning with Seinfeld and extending through projects like HBO’s Clear History. Schaffer is also known for co-creating FX comedies The League and Dave.

Adding even more star power to the mix, Barack and Michelle Obama have signed on as executive producers through their Higher Ground banner, alongside Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis. The former president quipped about the experience, saying, “I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.”

Untitled Larry David and Obama Project: Casting and Logline

While full casting details are still under wraps, the upcoming sketch series will bring together a blend of Curb Your Enthusiasm alumni and surprise guest stars.

According to the official logline, the premise leans into patriotic chaos: “President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion… But then Larry David called.” This suggests a comedic take on pivotal moments in American history, likely seen through the distinct, often exasperated, lens that only David can provide.

Larry David Ends His Hive Sabbatical and Returns to HBO

David’s long-running comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm originally aired for eight seasons on HBO between 2000 and 2011, before making a triumphant return with four more seasons—Season 9 in 2017, Season 10 in 2020, Season 11 in 2021, and what was billed as its final season in 2024.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential comedies of the 21st century, Curb earned 55 Emmy nominations throughout its 12-season run, along with widespread critical acclaim and a fiercely loyal fan base.

Reflecting on his post-Curb chapter, David said: “Once Curb ended, I celebrated with a three-day foam party. After a violent allergic reaction to the suds, I yearned to return to my simple life as a beekeeper, harvesting organic honey from the wildflowers in my meadow. Alas, one day my bees mysteriously vanished. And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television, hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive.”

HBO’s Amy Gravitt, executive vice president and head of comedy programming for HBO and Max, added: “It’s hard to remember a time before Curb, or without Larry David’s perspective on modern life. We’re thrilled that Larry is coming back to HBO, this time with Higher Ground, to give us a glimpse at our shared history as we celebrate our Semiquincentennial.”

Other Projects from Higher Ground

Beyond their collaboration with Larry David, Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, has several other scripted television projects in the works. Among them are The Altruists, a Netflix series centered on the rise and fall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, and an adaptation of the novel All the Sinners Bleed.
