Compass 4xe Edges Closer

Jeep revealed the 2026 Compass almost exactly two months ago, but it wasn't as informative an announcement as we might have hoped. At the time, Stellantis indicated that e-hybrid mild-hybrid and 4xe plug-in hybrid variants would be produced on the STLA Medium architecture, with the former expected to deliver 145 horsepower and the latter bringing another 50 ponies to the equation, but most of the focus then was on the all-electric version, the only model with all four wheels being driven (with 213 hp). Now, the automaker has given us a closer look at the 4xe PHEV specifically, which it claims "steps further into the realm of purpose-built off-roaders."

Subtle Off-Road Improvements

Jeep touts a 10mm higher suspension and new bumpers that enable approach, departure, and breakover angles of 27, 21, and 16 degrees, respectively. At the front, the bumper gets a black bumper shield with an anti-scratch coating, while the hood gets Jeep's traditional matte decal treatment to reduce sun glare when scaling tall obstacles. At the back, there's a tow hook for if the Compass doesn't live up to its claim of "Trail-Rated Power" (which the automaker didn't expand on, so we're not sure exactly what that means for the powertrain), and in the middle, 19-inch wheels get tires with a taller sidewall. All of this looks very neatly integrated into the Compass design, but the interior is especially attractive.

The 2026 Compass 4xe gets seating fabric (now in tan and black, rather than plain black as at launch) coated in polyurethane to make it both hardier and easier to clean than conventional cloth upholstery, and the rear seat-backs feature an anti-scratch surface to minimize damage from mountain bikes, camping gear, pets, or whatever else you put in the cargo area. Similar thought has been spared for the floor, with heavy-duty rubber mats included to make dirty shoes less of a headache.

But don't get your hopes up just yet. The 2026 Compass is currently only produced in Italy, and with the ever-present cloud of tariffs, it's going to be difficult to bring the crossover to America. Until Stellantis finds some sort of workaround, don't expect your local dealer to sell you a reservation. In the meantime, we'll have to wait patiently to see exactly what the Compass 4xe consists of, but what Jeep has revealed thus far looks good.
